At Rosaprima, we celebrate the over 25,000 florists across the globe who transform our roses into works of art. Today, we spotlight Holly Diana Smith from Holly Diana Floral, a floral designer and Rosaprima fan based out of McRae-Helena, Georgia. Her creative and artistic talents blossomed at a young age, and after discovering her love of floristry in high school, she immersed herself fully into education and training in preparation for a career in the floral industry.
How did you get started in floral design? What made you want to join the industry?
I was fortunate to be able to spend time in a local florist during my senior year of high school. I mostly observed, with just a small amount of hands-on work. This sparked my desire to become a floral designer. After high school graduation, my parents supported my wishes and agreed to help me open my own florist shop while I worked on a business management degree.
While doing tons of online research about floral design, I learned about a nearby florist, Christy Hulsey from Colonial House of Flowers, that was the 2017 Mayesh Design Star. Christy and I quickly developed a mentor/friend relationship and I was able to participate in one of her private workshops. I gained so much valuable knowledge and skills from this workshop that I was able to open my own florist and gift shop in December 2018 at the age of 18 in my hometown of McRae, Georgia. Christy has been one of my biggest supporters and a source of guidance on all things related to the floral industry. In fact, she is the one that introduced me to Rosaprima roses!
What’s your favorite thing about working with flowers?
My favorite thing about working with flowers is that it is just so much fun! I love to see how a design can start with just a few different varieties and colors and become a beautiful creation! It just makes me happy to create floral designs that will bring joy to others. One of my favorite quotes is “It is a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together.” This is a perfect description of my life right now!
What drives your creative spirit?
My creative spirit is driven by the things I love, such as the outdoors and animals. I love to create designs that are bohemian and whimsical. I also love to get inspiration from other artists.
